Do you want to know where cashews come from? From what I’ve seen, cashew nuts are mostly grown in Africa, in places like Burkina Faso, Ghana, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast.
Some of the goods are also made in Brazil. However, the cashew nut comes from Brazil.
No matter what, the cashew tree quickly spread to other warm places, and now the nut is grown in India, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and many other African countries as well as Brazil.
Bali is where our things come from. There will be more to say about the subject, though, as you read on.
It’s time to begin.
Where does cashew nut come from
The cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale) is where the cashew nut grows. It comes from tropical America and can grow up to 12 meters tall. It is in the Anacardiaceae family.
This tree grows quickly and can handle dry conditions and bad soils. It was first used to stop soil loss in dry areas and make a forest cover with shade.
The famous cashew nut comes from the juicy, orange fruit called a “cashew apple,” and these days, people are thinking about how to make them.
The main countries that make it are Vietnam, India, and the Ivory Coast. Together, they make more than 4 million tonnes of it every year.
There are a lot of vitamins and minerals in cashew nuts, including vegetable proteins, vitamins E, B1, B2, B6, B9, and K, and minerals like magnesium, copper, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and more.
60% of it is made up of monounsaturated fatty acids, which are good for heart health and would lower LDL cholesterol if you ate it. But be careful—with 632 kcal per 100 g, it still has a lot of calories.
Where do the best cashews come from
The cashew tree comes from Brazil and mostly grows in warm areas. The Ivory Coast is one of the biggest cashew nut makers in the world. In 2022, they made about 970,000 tons of nuts.
The cashew tree is a species that grows naturally in Brazil. It has very branchy, leafy leaves.
Its fruit has a soft part on the outside that looks like an apple (a fake fruit) and a hard part that looks like the famous cashew nut.
Which country produces the most cashew nuts
Asia and Africa are home to most of the countries that grow cashew nuts. Vietnam grows more peanuts than any other country, about 40% of the world’s total crop.
Indian, the world’s second-largest producer, came next, then Ivory Coast, Brazil, and Indonesia.
The countries that make the most are Vietnam, Nigeria, India, and Ivory Coast. Cashew farming has also grown in the smaller West African countries of Ivory Coast, Benin, and Guinea-Bissau.
Ghana has also been able to encourage more processing.
The Competitive Cashew Initiative (ComCashew) helps farmers grow cashews in West African countries so that the industry can compete and growers can make more money.
The government of Guinea-Bissau encouraged people to grow nuts as cash crops.
Minimum prices were set, and farmers were told to grow peanuts and sell them to buy rice, which was a basic food.
In 2006, when prices fell on the world market, Indian traders either quit buying cashews from Guinea-Bissau or bought them at prices that were lower than the world market prices. A lot of people went hungry because of this.
How is the cashew nut processed
It’s not easy to get the cashew nut out of its shell. Because the cashew nut’s thick, woody shell is hard to crack, the nuts are heated in the shell so that the seed stays the same.
The process makes the shell more fragile and simple to break.
The tough skin that covers the cashew nut must also be taken off after the top shell has been taken off.
Cashew nuts are still taken out of their shells by hand in most growth areas. This is because cashew nuts are very soft and can be easily broken.
In which country do cashews grow
Most of the cashew nuts that are sold in Europe are from Asia, mostly from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. At the moment, Jalall D’or gets its organic peanuts from Vietnam.
A cashew tree grows in a warm area and gives us cashew apples and the nuts that are inside them.
As was already said, Asia and Africa are the main places that grow cashew nuts. About 40% of the world’s cashew nuts come from Vietnam, which is the biggest source.
Indian, the world’s second-largest producer, came next, then Ivory Coast, Brazil, and Indonesia.
Can you grow cashews in Germany
It might come as a surprise that Germany sends a lot of cashew nuts back to other countries.
Due to its need for warm conditions all year, the cashew tree cannot be grown outside where we live.
One of these is a low temperature of about 18 °C, even at night. It is best to keep it under glass in a greenhouse or, if that’s not possible, in a winter yard all year.
Germany is still a big market, but demand dropped by 20% from 1996 to 2000.
Final thought
We now know Where cashew nuts come from. In 2021, Brazil will be the biggest producer of raw nuts in the world. Also, Abidjan confirmed its spot in 2023 with more than 1.2 million tonnes, more than 700,000 tonnes more than India, 650,000 tonnes more than Cambodia, 400,000 tonnes more than Nigeria, 300,000 tonnes more than Guinea-Bissau, and 300,000 tonnes more than Vietnam.
